What's the difference between microblading and powder brows?
I get this question a lot so I figured I would write up a post about this subject. Short answer, both techniques are forms of permanent makeup however microblading is performed manually and powder brows are performed by machine. However! The techniques and application are completely different.
The reason why we call the technique “Powder Brows” is because layers of pigment are tattooed into the skin with a needle to give a more “powdered in” look, just like brow makeup. It is not meant to mimic the application of a pencil, which would yield a more saturated look. Just a nicely shaded background for your natural hair to lay up against. When fully healed, the light shading gives your brows a fuller yet natural appearance. This technique can be customized to work well with any skin type.
Microblading is performed manually with a hand tool. The hand tool contains a needle grouping in the shape of a blade , which is then dipped in pigment and carved into the skin to create a hair like “stroke”. This form of permanent makeup is not ideal for those who suffer from any skin issues or if you have oily, very thin or very thick skin, textured skin, coarse brow hair or porous skin.
Always do your due diligence and research your artist and ask for photos of healed work with skin and brow hair types like yours. This will give you confidence in not only selecting your artist but it will also help you manage expectations with that artist.
